Apple Varieties

Thompson's Cider Mill and Orchard Apple varieties ripen at different times from September through October. The first varieties to be picked include McIntosh, Macoun, Gala, Greenings, Cortlands, Pippins and Honeycrisp. These varieties do not hold up particularly well, even in cold storage, so it's best to eat them while they're fresh picked in September and early October. Macoun is the best apple going for about four weeks, then its exceptional crispness begins to fade. Liberty is an excellent newer variety that we expect to have this year.

As the weeks move on more varieties are added to the list such as Mutsu, Idared and Golden Delicious in mid-month and culminating in the arrival of Winesaps, Northern Spys and Fuji at the end of the month. In general, the later an apple ripens, the longer it keeps. The late ripening varieties like Winesap will keep all winter in the refrigerator without losing much of their crispness.

We will offer as many of the old heirloom or antique varieties as we can find. Some are in very short supply.

All of the apples we offer are locally grown. We will also have many different pear varieties.
